Mai grew up in the lower middle class area of the city with her grandmother. Her father, a world class chef, would occasionally send money back to the two as he was constantly traveling: just enough to pay for the two story apartment. While she knew he cared about her, he was- to say the least- a selfish and corrupt man. After turning 8, she knew for certain becoming a chef was her path. To her, it was more than just cooking; it was a way for her father to both respect her and for her to be able to show him that you didn't need to be a bad person to reach the top.

Her dedication to this dream lead to plummets in her academics, often spending class time planning new recipes and doodling food. Mai wasn’t a good student to say the least- in fact, she barely passed her middle school years. The only way she entered a good school was through a single entrance exam score- she didn’t have the passion (or money) other students had and didn’t work nearly as hard as they did in class, resulting in a social rift between her and them. She didn’t complain though, it gave her more time to work on improving her skills as a chef. Soon enough, she- with her grandmother’s approval- turned the first floor of her apartment into a mini restaurant and moved her things upstairs. She cooked traditional, family styled foods at low prices and opened during after school times (sometimes even before school). It took a while, but an increasing amount of customers began showing up and her restaurant began gaining traction. Mai only hopes to make this a full-time thing and to maybe even advertise to fellow classmates.
